This new series of textile artworks depict a range of narratives that were shared with me by friends and family still living in a war-torn Afghanistan. I began documenting the stories and personal accounts of my cousins, aunts, and close friends due to our ongoing conversations around the possible return of the Taliban regime amid the ongoing U.S.-Taliban peace deal process. After speaking with them over the past two years, I have found they are predominantly concerned with maintaining their basic human rights and the progress Afghan women have made in education, employment, and overall role in society. In this exhibition, I am examining how the lifestyles and experiences of those close to me in Afghanistan has changed by using sewn textile fragments to assemble a reality that explores the feelings of in-betweenness, fear, longing, love, guilt, loss, and hope. Each piece weaves together interior and exterior social spaces as a way of showing the nuances of their intimate and urban lives. Whether a young woman is sipping her coffee in a café near the destroyed Buddha’s of Bamiyan or a couple is meeting secretly against their families wishes somewhere in Kabul, I want the expressions of my fictional figures to make viewers pause for a moment to realize, accept, and understand the ongoing political and social upheavals in Afghanistan.
